Cañada CollegeAbout the
Cañada College is a community college located in Redwood City, California between the vibrant city of San Francisco and the high-tech city of San Jose. The College offers associate degree programs in a wide range of majors that allow students to transfer to 4-year universities including within the University of California, California State University system, and other California and out-of-state private universities. Cañada College serves approximately 6,500 students each semester and has modern classrooms and science labs. Our Associate to Bachelor Program, Career Center, Learning Center, Library, STEM Center, and University Center provides additional academic support to all students including peer-tutoring and workshops on improving study skills and academic writing. Students are highly encouraged to meet with an academic counselor through the Counseling Center and Transfer Center every semester, to ensure successful completion and transfer. Our small community provides a friendly and student-centered learning environment. The International Student Center (ISC) provides individualized services to international students, so they can achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals. ISC also promotes understanding and respect for diverse perspectives by providing college-wide opportunities for community engagement and cultural exchange.
The Silicon Valley Intensive English Program (SVIEP) provides high-quality, intensive English instruction at Cañada College, with a pathway to matriculate to any of our three colleges upon successful completion of Level 4.
Silicon Valley Intensive English Program SVIEP students who successfully SVIEP Level 4 are guaranteed admission into the San Mateo Colleges of Silicon Valley (Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College). To ease this process, college staff provide Transition-to-College workshops and events for students planning to matriculate. Program features include: 1. No TOEFL or IELTS score required for admission. Students take an English assessment test upon arrival. (SVIEP accepts EIKEN scores below 2A). 2. Five start dates per year, in Fall (8-week or 16-week sessions), Spring (8-week or 16-week sessions), or Summer (8-week sessions). 3. Tuition price and I-20 bank statement requirements are based only on the number of sessions for which you apply. 4. Small classes with hands-on personal attention taught by experienced instructors with Master’s Degrees (TESOL, Applied Linguistics, and related fields). 5. 22 hours of instruction per week with skill areas such as Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Grammar, and American Culture. 6. Multi-level program with preparation for transition to college and student support services such as tutoring, note taking, study skills, and financial and career planning. Students also have opportunities to engage with Americans, join student clubs and cross-cultural activities, and visit local universities. 7. Guaranteed admission into one of our three colleges upon successful completion of Level 4. 8. HOUSING Cañada College does not offer on-campus housing. Below is a list of housing resources. New students should secure housing before arriving in the U.S. and plan to arrive at least two weeks before the start of the semester to attend the New International Student Orientation and to adjust to the surrounding areas.
SMCCD Housing Assistance SMCCD provides international students with assistance in finding safe and affordable housing located near the campuses and public transportation. Housing options include apartment rentals, room rentals, home stays, and shared housing with other international students.
Host Family International Student Placements (ISP) has successfully placed thousands of international students with host families throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Each host family is screened and interviewed at their home before being selected to host international students. Each student is placed in a living situation where they will feel comfortable and secure. Host families are located near public transportation that is easily accessible to the College.
Shared Housing International Student Placements (ISP) offers students the opportunity to live in shared housing with other international students. Housing is fully furnished with a fully equipped kitchen with cooking/dining necessities and rent includes all utilities (water, electricity, and internet access). Shared housing are located near public transportation that is easily accessible to the College. For students age 18 or older only.
Cañada College Housing Board allows students and community members to list available rooms for rent or students seeking roommates. Other housing resources can also be found on the Housing Board that is located next to the Center for Student Life & Leadership Development in Building 5, Room 354. Cañada College is located in the foothills of Redwood City with spectacular views of the Peninsula (San Mateo County). The College is just 30 miles from two major cities, San Francisco and San Jose. San Francisco has many tourist attractions such as Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf and San Jose is located in “Silicon Valley," the home of computer technology and high-tech industry.Our campus is accessible by Sam Trans bus #274 that connects to Caltrain with stations in between San Francisco and San Jose. The College is also within easy traveling distance to several colleges and universities including Notre Dame de Namur University, CSU East Bay, Mission College, Palo Alto University, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, and Santa Clara University. Cañada College is also just 20 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, minutes to hiking areas and beautiful Redwood National Parks, and five hours to ski resorts in northern California.The City of Redwood City is a small but vibrant city that takes pride in its diverse community.
