The English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Bridgeport is a well-established intensive English as a Second Language program, with experienced teachers holding advanced degrees, a commitment to innovation and excellence in language instruction, and small classes of 3-15 students.ELI students have access to all university resources and benefits. They benefit from being part of a global educational community in the United States.
Purpose: The English Language Institute prepares non-native English speakers for success in undergraduate and graduate programs of the University of Bridgeport.
Mission: The English Language Institute sees its primary mission as promoting exchange and understanding among peoples of all nations by helping them improve their knowledge of the English language as a medium of international communication.
The Bridge to College English Program is for students who are conditionally accepted to a University of Bridgeport undergraduate or graduate academic program and are in ELI’s Advanced level. They can take one or two academic courses during the fall or spring semester, in addition to their ELI program classes. Students will be full-time ELI students and part-time university students.
Students will get an English immersion experience before starting college or graduate school full-time and have a supportive introduction to American higher education. Knowing your English Language Institute level before you arrive allows you to plan your length of study. Meetings with academic advisors while you are in ELI will be arranged for you to learn about your major and plan academic classes.

Students are placed in a level by a placement test during Orientation or by a TOEFL or IELTS score submitted before they arrive.
Curriculum Highlights
Students learn academic style Writing of multi-paragraph essays and summaries. The Advanced level learns to write research papers.
Academic Reading skills at the appropriate level are addressed in all classes.
Listening practice is provided by in-class audio and video as well as opportunities in the computer lab. High Intermediate and Advanced classes practice academic lecture listening and note-taking in preparation for university work.
Speaking classes allow for formal and informal, individual and small group speaking tasks, and speaking opportunities are integrated into all skill classes.
Every level studies all the major areas of Grammar, and Advanced grammar classes focus on editing.
Other Highlights
Cultural awareness is part of all classes so that students know how to be successful in a U.S. academic environment.
All students can participate in informal conversation groups with American students after class.
Students have the opportunity to visit university classes and attend campus lectures.
Students write and perform a skit in front of students and teachers.
Students prepare and participate in a semi-formal debate with an audience of their peers and/or university faculty.

Housing
On-campus housing is available for all and required for students under 21 years of age. Undergraduate housing includes meals during the fall and spring semesters. We are located on the campus of the University of Bridgeport facing the playing fields, beaches, and picnic areas of Seaside Park on Long Island Sound. The city of Bridgeport is in the state of Connecticut on the east coast of the United States. Beautiful contemporary and traditional buildings grace the campus. New York City and the small cities and towns of Connecticut are an easy train ride away.

Activities
At UB’s ELI, students enjoy a full range of program activities that help orient them to the American culture and enrich their stay in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Participating in these activities teach students about the local region, help them practice their English-speaking skills, and invite social engagement with American and other international students for a memorable, life-affirming experience.
As University of Bridgeport students, ELI students can join in all trips, clubs, and events organized by the UB Student Programming office. In addition, the following activities are designed specifically for our international students:
UBuddies is a program that matches native English speaking students with ELI students for conversation and cultural exchange.
Thursday Conversation Group meets after class to play word games and have relaxed conversation with American students.
Trips are organized every session to New York City, sports events, New Haven, and interesting cultural destinations.
