University of Missouri-ColumbiaAbout the
The University of Missouri in Columbia was established in 1839 and is the state’s oldest and largest public institution. It is often referred to as a “Public Ivy” university, offering top-quality education at a reasonable cost. The Fiske Guide to Colleges listed MU among its “Best Buy” schools for 2018. The campus has more than 30,000 students (2,100 of whom are international) from throughout the U.S. and more than 100 countries. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in more than 300 accredited academic programs, many of which are recognized worldwide for their academic excellence.
The Intensive English Program (IEP) offers 16-week sessions during the fall and spring semesters and an eight-week session during the summer. The IEP believes in providing personalized instruction; consequently, the class size is kept small (12 students on the average), allowing each student to receive a large amount of individual attention.
Courses are available for students with beginning, intermediate and advanced English proficiency. Students are placed in one of five levels of proficiency as determined by the results of the placement test administered at the beginning of the term. Students receive a minimum of 20 hours of instruction per week. The curriculum includes instruction in grammar, writing, reading, speaking, pronunciation, listening, vocabulary and library skills. In the higher levels, the program has a strong academic focus; students work on improving reading skills, writing research papers, developing note-taking skills and communicating effectively in a university setting. The courses students take at each level are as follows:
Level 1
Grammar with Writing I
Guided Reading and Vocabulary I
Listening and Speaking I
Reading Skills I
Level 2
Grammar II
Listening and Speaking II
Reading II
Writing II
Level 3
Grammar for Academic Purposes III
Listening and Speaking for Academic Purposes III
Reading for Academic Purposes III
Writing for Academic Purposes III
Level 4
Grammar for Academic Purposes IV
Listening and Speaking for Academic Purposes IV
Reading for Academic Purposes IV
Writing for Academic Purposes IV
Level 5
Grammar for Academic Purposes V
Listening and Speaking for Academic Purposes V
Reading for Academic Purposes V
Writing for Academic Purposes V
The amount of time required to complete the program satisfactorily depends on many factors — the student’s English proficiency when starting the program, the aptitude of the student, the student’s effort and the student’s previous experience with English. Each student is tested upon arrival and placed in the appropriate level of proficiency. In general, if a student begins the program at Level 1 and completes each level in one semester, it would take the student five semesters to complete the program.

Accommodation
Housing
Students may choose to live in a private apartment off campus or in a room in a university-owned residence hall (dormitory). The cost of a double room (a room shared by two people) in an MU residence hall for one semester varies depending on the particular residence hall and meal plan chosen. The cost for the summer session is approximately $2,000.
We recommend that single students live in the residence halls because the experience helps students easily interact with American students in daily situations. Living in a residence hall helps international students practice speaking English and understand American culture.
Another popular option for students it to live off campus in a privately owned apartment. If students choose this option, we strongly recommend they use the services offered by the MU Office of Off-Campus Student Services, which can assist students with understanding their options.
For married students or students with children, Residential Life has a few unfurnished apartments collectively called University Student Apartments.
Surroundings
The University of Missouri is located in the center of Columbia, Missouri, a medium-sized city with small-town friendliness in the heart of the Midwest. Columbia is a safe, clean and attractive community situated midway between St. Louis and Kansas City. It has many stores, shopping malls, international food stores, movie theaters, numerous churches and a mosque. Columbia is often ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S. because of its excellent quality of life, safety, cost of living and educational opportunities.
Facilities
Students may take advantage of many different campus activities, including concerts, sports events, guest speakers, movies and international cultural events.
Students may use all of the services and facilities, such as tennis courts, swimming pools, basketball and volleyball courts, table tennis equipment, weight room, exercise room, indoor running tracks and soccer fields.
There are many clubs and organizations at MU (e.g., international, recreational, social, religious) that students are encouraged to join.
Activity
Field Trip
The Intensive English Program (IEP) provides a variety of out-of-town trips for students. Students have the opportunity to visit a variety of places in Missouri, including St. Louis, Kansas City, Hannibal and Jefferson City. These outings include visiting the St. Louis Zoo, going ice skating, touring the Missouri State Capitol and shopping in Kansas City. The IEP provides transportation. Students pay any admission fees and personal expenses.
Conversation Partners Program
The IEP Conversation Partners Program matches IEP students with MU student volunteers, providing them with the opportunity to meet Americans outside of class to practice their English language skills and learn about American culture. IEP students who participate in the program report that they really enjoy the experience and recommend it to all new IEP students. Being paired with an American student allows them to:
*Practice speaking English,
*Share information about their cultures, and
*Participate in different kinds of activities.
Conversation partners typically meet one or two hours each week. Many IEP students develop long-lasting friendships with their conversation partners. There is not charge for students to participate in the program.
Conversation Program with residents at Lenoir Woods
IEP students are encouraged to participate in the Conversation Program with residents at Lenoir Woods, a local retirement community. The residents at Lenoir Woods are interested in talking with IEP students and helping them with their English. Some of the Lenoir residents are retired professors, and many of them have traveled to or lived in other countries. They have seen many changes in American culture and lifestyle during their lives, and they have a lot of fascinating stories to share. IEP students are provided with transportation to Lenoir Woods about every other week during the term.
