English Language Institute (ELI) About the
Founded in 1979, the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) offers the highest-quality intensive English programs for degree-seeking students, business and legal professionals, English language teachers, and general English language learners. Its accreditation member CEA was founded in 1999 by English Language Professionals as a specialized accrediting agency. ELI faculty members, as a either master's or doctorate in applied linguistics, apply their method of English teaching taught abroad to students in a more interesting and proficient ways. The University of Delaware, which traces its history back to 1743, is a nationally and internationally recognized research institution of higher learning. The University of Delaware’s educational mission is to prepare students to live in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world. UD is located in Newark, Delaware, a quiet, safe and friendly college town of 30,000 people. Students can enjoy life outside of class at nearby recreational areas on the Atlantic Ocean and in the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania with a variety of summer and winter activities.
Focus of Study, Benefit, Goal of this course : English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses provide language instruction for academic study in American universities. Language skills addressed include: listening comprehension, fluency development, oral intelligibility, reading, grammar, writing, and vocabulary development. Academic study skills addressed include: test taking and note taking skills, academic vocabulary usage, critical reading and writing, comprehending academic lectures, research and library skills, formal composition forms and development, including research papers.Students in the Academic Track may apply for conditional admission to the University of Delaware and to any of our many partner universities.

Classes are held 28 hours per week, with students from 10 to 14 in each class, in six different levels. The minimum age for the program is 18. This two months long program is focused primarily on Listening and Speaking, and Reading/Writing for better communication and comprehension of English.Each student enrolls in two courses that fall into two categories: Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing. Listening/speaking courses develop students’ language skills in areas such as fluency, oral grammar, pronunciation, and listening comprehension. The courses use current, proven methods that help students use English in meaningful ways to communicate ideas and needs, solve problems, and participate in American life on campus and in the community. Reading/writing courses develop students’ language skills in areas such as reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and research/library skills. Instruction integrates these skills to improve written communication and reading comprehension, using a progressively challenging curriculum from beginning to advanced levels. (10 hours per week)

Global community
- In the Global Community at the Waverly, ELI and UD students live four students to an apartment. Each student has their own bedroom and bathroom. Students share common areas in the apartment and socialize with other community members in the beautiful, modern complex shared spaces.
- Each ELI student must pay a rent of US $850 per month for Global Community apartments
- UD students may also rent a room in the Global Community on a 12-month lease, September 1 – August 31.
- New residents must also pay a one-time deposit of one month’s rent when they move in.

- The deposit will be returned to the student after they move out if the apartment is left in good condition and is clean.

- Homestay fees must be paid directly to the homestay host on the day that the student moves into the home.
- Prices listed are for each ELI session. Each session lasts 7-8 weeks (approximately 2 months). These prices cover the student’s accommodations from the official move-in date to the official move-out date. - With the ability of transcending the boundaries of traditional off campus living, The INNternationale™ provides a welcoming center and home for a combination of international students, visiting professors, international guests and American students, while promoting their interaction both within the Residence as well as with the greater University of Delaware community. - Programs offered at the Residence, Conference Center and Café will open a unique window onto the new world that is being encountered in today’s global community.
- Since it must accommodate many different needs and preferences, the residence offers a variety of floor plans for fully furnished rooms.
- The first floor includes some slightly larger, gracefully appointed executive rooms for faculty, graduate students and the resident director, each having a private bath and full size bed, chair, desk, bureau, closet, color television and refrigerator.
- The INN is handicap accessible with elevator service to all four floors and provision for students with physical disabilities. - In addition, the first floor contains 3 executive lounges, one with a full kitchen, a second for contemplation and the third, at the formal entrance, functions as The Reception Lounge with a fire place and French doors opening to a private garden within a courtyard.
- The second and third floors contain a variety of rooms: Single rooms with private bath, the single/single rooms with shared bath between, the Double/double rooms, two double occupancy rooms with a large shared bath in between and the double rooms for two residents sharing a semi private bath.
- The second floor also contains the resident assistant.
- The second floor contains a large lounge with kitchen. The second and third floor have an additional contemplation lounge.

- The Program:
The heart of the Innternationale is the program. A unique feature of the Innternationale is the spoken language program. The language program brings students together to learn about different cultures and languages. With all these activities there is never a lack of things to do or learn at the Innternationale.

The ELI hosts activities, cultural trips, and events for all ELI students throughout the session, things such as trips to New York City or Washington DC, dance parties, Meet & Greet picnics, and more! Women’s Life Support Group
The Women’s Life Support Group supports women of diverse cultural background transition to American culture. We share conversations about cultural identity and challenges faced in daily life. The group provides a safe space to build cross cultural friendships and is open to both ELI and UD female students.
UD Registered Student Organizations
The University of Delaware offered a wide variety of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), which are clubs created and led by students about many different topics. From the the 8-Bit Orchestra (a club about video game music as an art form) to Zumba Club, there are approximately 432 different RSOs to choose from! As an ELI student, you cannot vote as a matriculated member, but you can participate in most activities and events with American students – click here to check out the full list on the StUDent Central website, or click here to see a list of some of these clubs that we recommend!
Intramural Sports
Sign up to play sports with friends from the ELI and UD students through the Intramurals program. Some of the sports offered in the program include soccer, American football, basketball, or volleyball. Contact Tim Kim for more information.

ELI Garden
The ELI has a community garden on its property which is supported by various UD departments. Working in the ELI Garden is a terrific way to interact with Americans while working on a useful–and delicious!–project.
