English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is an intensive four-level American language program that focuses on language skills and college preparation. The program is divided into four levels from beginner to college prep. Graduation from the program qualifies students for admission to VIU's academic programs without a TOEFL score. Classmates from over 50 countries study in a small classroom setting of 10 to 15 students. Non-intensive ESL classes as well as TOEFL preparation courses are offered in the evenings.

Shared housing For students seeking a more independent alternative to a host family, shared housing is an ideal choice. Roommate and shared housing options include townhouses and single-family homes. Kitchen privileges are usually included in these arrangements.
Homestay The option of homestay is ideal for students who prefer to live with an American family. Staying with an American family will not only help students improve their English skills, but will also provide them with the ability to experience American culture on a first–hand basis. VIU recommends Just like Home, a local organization that specializes in homestay arrangements. They are designed to make our students feel at home when they have to be away from home. Benefits of the homestay option often include: Private bedroom Private or shared bath, Internet access Access to television and telephone, Safe and clean home environment, Laundry facility in the home, Study and quiet areas ,Convenient and reliable public transportation (30-60 minute commute), Neighborhood tour and orientation, Three meal plan options: (Bed & Breakfast, Deluxe and Supreme) Students are encouraged to start arranging accommodation and housing as soon as they receive their I-20 as extra time is always good to spare especially when preparing for a new school life. While students are looking at housing options, VIU will provide them with a set list of several hotels that are within walking distance of VIU. Discounted rate is also provided so please contact the school for additional information. Housing costs range from $350 to $600 monthly. Students are also expected to pay for separate internet, telephone, tv, gas and utility expenses.
