though it is a part of the public higher education system, is a Liberal Arts
university where curriculum is aimed at imparting general knowledge and
developing intellectual capacities that are not solely limited to vocational or
technical curriculum. In 1988, the UW Board of Regents designated UW-Superior
as “Wisconsin’s Public Liberal Arts College”, and in 2003 UW-Superior has been accredited
by NCA as a liberal arts-based educational institution. At this university,

Curriculum includes languagestudies that include Listening, Reading, Speaking/Pronunciation,Composition,Vocabulary, and Grammar studies.InListening classes, students will Use a variety of sources to practice listeningskills that can be applied both inside and outside of the classroom. For Speaking/Pronunciation,students can gain confidence when they speak in a variety of situations.Students will be comfortable with casual conversations, formal dialogue, classpresentations, and so on. With Reading classes, students will have in-classreading exercises and a personalized reading program. Students will not onlyread for pleasure but also for university studies. Exposure to a wide varietyof texts will provide the students with opportunities to find and select theirown materials as well as develop some personal preferences. In Composition, students will start writing some basicparagraphs through guided practices. Then students will learn to research,organize, and compose research papers. In addition to these core skills, studentswill also learn word-processing skills to prepare for university writingassignments. With Vocabularycourse, students will develop a vocabulary base appropriate for everydayconversations and classroom situations. They will also learn methods forlong-term building and retaining functional vocabulary. For grammarclasses, students are encouraged to learn grammar through use, not just viatext. UW-Superior offers on-campus housing which is a
unique opportunity for English-learning international students to learn in both
in and out of classroom. Four on-campus residence halls that are just few
minutes’ walk away from campus are available. All residence halls have 24-hour
computer rooms, study areas, fitness rooms, telephones in all rooms, DVD player
rentals, cable TV in lounges, and on-site laundry facilities. Women-only and
men-only floors are also available. Students under 20 years of age are asked to
live in residence halls.
Surrounding Area
UW-Superior is located in a residential
neighborhood very close to a dynamic med-sized city. Lake Superior, the largest
lake in the world is also close by. The city’s metro area has over 250,000
conveniences, shopping, and entertainment spots. More importantly, the school
is known to have numerous opportunities for internships and post-graduation
employment. Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota area has been recognized
to be one of the top 15 small metros in the United States and known to have
superior academic and cultural environment. Students will enjoy being close to
the city, yet having a quiet and close-knit community at UW-Superior.
Facilities
Along with four residence halls, UW-Superior’s
facilities include Marcovich Wellness Center, Wessman Arena, Yellowjack Union,
Outdoor Athletic fields. Along with these activities-involved centers, there is
the office of Muticultural affairs where international students or students
with multinational backgrounds can have a social gatherings and mixers with
other students. The center represents various cultures in artwork and reading
materials, and help providing career and personal development opportunities.
