Intnsive English education program at University of Hawaii Mano was founded almost 30 years ago, and it is one of the most renowned university ESL programs in the United States. The program specifically focuses on helping students to be capable of having fluent oral communications. The University boasts strong faculty body, and there are members who are still very active in the research fields and many professional organizations and boards. There are two different programs available for students taking ESL program: ELI, and HELP. Help focuses on Academic English preparation, whereas ELI mainly focuses on teaching general English to students who are non-native English speakers. Students have remarked “I have developed not only a base of knowledge but practical skills and experience.” Students can always pursue higher level of education whenever they are successfully accomplished one program due to the ESL departments broad course offerings.

University of Hawaii at Manoa is the main campus of the University of Hawaii public education system. Among the 10 universities included in the system, Manoa campus has the oldest and most renowned ESL programs. Students have diverse backgrounds, and come to the university to not only study but also to research and experience different culture. University itself has been ranked as one of the best colleges in the United States, and has been ranked in the top 30 public universities (research) for engineering, and science. There are two intensive English education programs called ELI and HELP. HELP is more appropriate for students who intend to pursue their studies in the United States after graduation. Accommodation
Students who will attend University of Hawaii
Manoa for ESL program will mostly live in on-campus and off-campus dormitories,
in private apartments, or with local families as a homestay. Private agencies
arrange homestays for those students who want to intermingle with local culture
and practice English on a daily basis. Students who are interested in being
closer to classes and experience more curricular activities should join
on-campus dormitories. Students must individually arrange their housing
options, and the sooner the arrangements are, the better the chance of getting
first choice option.
Surrounding Area
Manoa is a neighborhood with amazing views in
Honolulu. Honolulu is the largest city in the United States, and is a state
capital of Hawaii. Honolulu is already well-known for its beautiful beach and
sceneries, but the city is also famous for its diverse population and international
scholars. Next to Manoa, the island of Ohau is renowned for its natural beauty.
Other tourist spots include Dianmond Head, Pearl Harbor, and a Volcano site.
Students can also enjoy outdoors activities, shopping, and sightseeing and
always enjoy nice sunny weather year around. The University of Hawaii Leisure
Center offers international students opportunities to mingle with American
students, and enjoy activities while practicing English.
Facilities
Facilities include multiple language
classrooms, computer labs, and research labs. University of Hawaii also has
Leisure Center where they can socialize with other international or local
students and participate in outdoors or one-day activities at the same time.
잘 다녀 왔습니다. 팔이 햇빛에 잘 그을려서 귀국했습니다~저는 여름동안 3주 esta 비자로 그룹 연수를 다녀온 경험을 작성해보겠습니다 . 숙박은 따로 이용하였습니다
1. 숙박
키친있는 호텔, 뱀부와이키키호텔에 묶었는데 해당 호텔은 콘도처럼 개인이 분양받은50%, 호텔에서 운영하는 호텔50%였습니다. 처음에 프론트직원 실수로 개인룸인 것으로 착각하여 호텔클리닝서비스를 못 받을 뻔 하기도 했습니다.
하와이 숙박에서 저렴하게 하려면 에어비앤비로 콘도등에 묶는 것이 호텔보다 나은 것 같습니다. 개인 선호도에 따라 호텔이 안전하다고 판단하여 저는 호텔을 선택하긴 했습니다. 밤에 10시 넘어 호텔문이 안열려 눈에 익숙한 프론트직원에게 손짓을 했더니 잠금장치(10시 정도 지나면 자동 셧업된다고 함)를 풀어주어서 들어갔는데 직원이 곧바로 잠근 후 노숙자같은 아저씨가 호텔문을 열고 들어오려 하다가 그냥 지나가기도 했습니다.
첨에 소화불량에 몸살이 걸려 마트의 쌀을 사다가 죽을 끓여 먹기도 했는데 키친이 있는 호텔 선택을 잘 한 것 같았습니다. 담에 하와이가면 에어비앤비로 갈 수도 있습니다.
겁이 많아 에어비앤비는 엄두가 안났는데 이젠 용기가 생겼습니다.
2. 기념푼
갑비싼 것도 좋지만 ABC스토어에 진열된 귀여운 팔찌들이 괜찮은 것 같습니다. 로스에서 가족들 가방, 티셔츠, 스투시, 파타고니아 등등 여러 곳을 들러 구입했지만 귀국하고 현실로 복귀하니 많이 지출한 것에 대해 약간의 후회가 들기도 하더군요. 달러로 쓰니까 현실감이 떨어지고 쉽게 쓰게 되더라고요. 보통 해외나가면 그날그날 정산하는 편이었고 계획해서 쓰는 편인데 이번 하와이에서는 도착 후 1주일 동안 감기와 소화불량으로 고생하고 아침 일찍 학교 가랴, 볼거 보랴.. 몸도 많이 피곤하여 이런저런 신경쓰는게 피곤하여 금전관리가 잘 안된 면이 있습니다. 특히 과자나 너트류는 기념품점 말고 월마트에서 구입하는 걸 강추합니다. 로쓰도 괜찮습니다. 다만 스투시나 파타고니아는 호놀룰룰, 하와이등의 레터가 하와이만의 에디션이므로 사고자 하는 분들은 하와이 도착후 1주일내에 구입하시는 걸 추천드립니다. 파타고니아호놀룰루는 워낙 관광객들이 많이 파타로하 에디션을 원하면 노스쇼어에서 구입하는 것이 더 가능성 높습니다. 저는 노슷쇼어에 갔다가 매장이 작고 파타로하 디자인도 맘에 안들어서 그냥 왔습니다만..
3. 관광
마우이 3일, 빅아일랜드 당일, 노스쇼어 당일 렌트 로 다녀왔는데 마우이의 풍광은 예상보나 넘 멋져서 기대 이상의 만족이 있습니다.
하지만 담에가면 카우아이와 빅아일랜드를 가고 싶습니다.
노스쇼어의 훌리훌리닭고기, 돈지오반니쉬림프 등은 사실 위생적인 느낌 없이 지저분하여 추천하고 싶지는 않지만 근처 다른 식당도 있으니 구경만 하시고 식당에서 깔끔하게 드심을 추천드립니다. 파리날리는 테이블이 지금도 생각납니다.
4. 수업
칸 선생님의 수업을 들었는데 하와이에 왕조가 있었다는 것도 처음 알게 되었습니다. 수업내용은 하와이이 역사, 미국의 여러 주 이름들, 하와이현지 언론기사(방송포함) 선택하여 발표하는 것도 있었고 훌라수업이 3주차에 있었는데 매우 인상적이었습니다. 옛날에 훌라는 남자들만의 전유물이었고 여자가 훌라춤을 추는 것은 사형감이었다고 합니다.
5. 하와이 연수에 임하는 자세
일반적으로 해외여행은 10일 정도하기 때문에 21일 정도 머무눈 여행에 대하여는 단기여행처럼 생각하지 말고 여유롭게 머무는 방식으로 추진하는 것이 낫다고 봅니다.
한국에서 계획할 때는 여기저기 모든 곳을 다 가고 싶었지만 막상 현지에서는 피로감이 상당했습니다. 더운 날씨, 따가운 햇빛, 새로운 환경에서의 긴장감 등으로 차라리 쉬고 싶다는 생각이 간절했습니다. 이미 예약한 것이라 마우이도 빅섬도 노스쇼어도 다녀왔지만 호놀룰루 근처에서만 놀아도 걸어도 의미있는 여행이 될 수 있을 것 같습니다.
자신의 여행취향을 정확히 파악하는 것이 중요한데 기존에 경험한 10일정도 여행의 느낌으로 21일 정도의 여행(더구나 오전에 수업이 있음) 을 감당하는 것은 분명히 차이가 있습니다. 일행과 함께 계획하는 여행은 가능하면 상대방의 스타일을 파악하시고 합류하세요, 예를 들면 본인은 문화재를 탐구하고 가보고 싶은데 상대방은 트레일을 즐기는 활동가형이다. 본인은 바다에 들어가고 싶지 않는데 상대는 바다에 들어가면 물개수준이다...본인은 채소류를 좋아하는데 상대는 고기만 좋아한다. 등등 .이러면 공통점이 보이는 부분은 함께 다니고 차이가 나는 부분은 따로 다녀야 합니다. 본인 또는 상대방이 틀린게 아니라 본인과 상대방의 스타일이 다르기 때문입니다
저는 24년 8월3주간 대학교에서 진행하는 그룹연수로 3주 프로그램을 잘 다녀왔습니다
1. NICE PROGRAM : 첫날 레벨테스트를 한 후 당초 반배정이 5개 등급정도로 분배가 되는줄알았는데 3개반으로 반배정이 됨(HIGH, INTERMEDIATE, BEGINNER)
제가 속한(HIGH) 반의 경우 13명(한국인9 일본인4)으로 한국인 비율도 높은 편이었고 인원수도 많은편으로 수업 효율성이 좀 떨어진것 같음
이와 같은 내용을 학교측 인터뷰할때 전달했었는데 크게 신경쓰지 않음(레벨별 반편성으로 국적별 분배 어렵다는 답변)
어학프로그램 특성상 반배정인원은 10명 이내로 하고 국적별 분배도 좀 고려는 하면 어떨가 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 아무래도 한국사람끼리 영어 쓰는 건 좀 서로 어색한 측면이 있더라구요
2. 여행 : KAUAI(1주차 주말), MAUI(3주차 주말) 다녀왔는데 후회는 없네요 3주 기간이 막상 지나고 보면 그렇게 긴 시간도 아니고 주중에는 수업이 있어서 시간활용이 필요
와이키키에서 거리가 있는 곳은 돈보다는 시간 절약을 위해 우버나 렌트카 이용 추천(버스는 왕복 기본 2~3시간 소요)
INTERCHANGE STUDENT학생과의 대화를 활용해서 LOCAL들이 찾는 여행지를 찾는 여행지를 방문(ELECTRICITY BEACH 등)
하와이 바다(파도)는 한국에 비해 위험 요소가 많아 수영을 잘하는 사람도 주의할 필요가 있음
3. 숙박 : ILLIKAI HOTEL, WAIKIKI BANYAN 실제 묶었던 호텔로 시설, 위치등이 좋아서 타 호텔에 비해 만족도가 있었음(와이키키 시내쪽은 소음이 심해 비추천)
다른분들 숙소 얘기들어봐도 와이키키 시내에서 조금 떨어진 퍼블릭 골프장 쪽이나 일리카이 쪽 와이키키 주변부가 만족도가 더 높은 듯, 여유있음 4성급 이상 추천(시설이 너무 낙후됨)
4. 그외 : HOLO카드는 추천(핑크트롤리 타기 위해 JCB카드 추가로 발급받는건 비추-생각보다 많이 이용 안함), 반입금지되는 한국식품외 햇반, 밑반찬 등은 많이 챙겨올수록 이득(HMART 도 가격 비쌈), 입국심사시 현금을 얼마정도 가지고 왔냐고 물어보는 경우는 없었음(다른 교육생 포함), 캐리어는 26인치 이상 크키 2개정도가 적당(추가로 구매하는 교육생들 있었음)
대략 생각나는대로 두서없이 적어 보냅니다. ㅎㅎ
대행업무부터 그외 소소한 부분까지 신경서주셔서 교육생 모두가 큰탈없이 하와이에서의 3주를 평생 잊지 못할 추억으로 간직하고 돌아왔습니다.
