Intensive English Language Institute (IELI)About the
Since 1979, the IELI has been helping students from different language backgrounds enhance their English skills. Core courses in reading, writing, speaking/listening and grammar focus on language skills across seven proficiency levels--from high beginning to advanced. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) laboratory sessions reinforce what is learned in the classroom and co-curricular activities provide the cultural context for the practice of language skills learned. Special Topics courses further prepare students for academic success. The mission of the Intensive English Language Institute at Creighton University is to help students from different language backgrounds to communicate effectively in English as well as deepen their understanding of the U.S. culture and prepare for the rigors of undergraduate and graduate studies.

The professional staff of the Office of International Programs leads a variety of cross-cultural workshops as well as small-group classes. All the classes repeat themselves, reinforcing what is learned in the classroom and co-curricular activities provide the cultural context for the practice of language skills learned. Benefit, Goal of this course : This course is designed to help students develop the ability to comprehend and interpret written and spoken texts in English. Students continue to develop critical thinking skills by evaluating and comparing multiple texts. Students also continue to develop strategies and skills to broaden their understanding and use of new vocabulary by learning various word forms and using them in context.
Curriculum : In this program, students are introduced to basic to advanced listening, reading, speaking, writing strategies and skills with content on general interest and cultural topics, conversation and pronunciation skills, and academic speaking skills.
Classroom Hour : Full-time enrollment in IELI is 21 hours of instruction a week.

Accommodation
IELI students may request lodging on campus. In fact, they are encouraged to live on campus so that they can take full advantage of Creighton activities, events, and—most importantly—interactions with other students and faculty. Creighton’s residence halls are in the heart of campus, next to popular campus locations such as the Kiewit Fitness Center, the Java Jay and St. John's Church. Each residence hall is fully furnished, complete with kitchens, study rooms, computer labs, laundry facilities and internet access. However, the Office of International Programs staff assists students in finding suitable apartments or homestay if they are eligible to live off campus.

Creighton's 108-acre campus is within walking distance of downtown Omaha, the riverfront parks, and the Old Market shopping, restaurant, and entertainment district. Founded in 1854, Omaha has always been a dynamic, energetic city continually transforming itself. Whether it was the Native American Indian tribes, pioneers, railroad laborers or meatpackers, everyone who came to call Omaha home helped shape its current cultural diversity, hard work ethic and friendly demeanor. In recent years, the Omaha riverfront and downtown area have experienced tremendous growth with over two billion dollars in new development. Currently the 42nd largest city in the United States, the metropolitan area is home to over 800,000 people who welcome visitors with open arms and authentic Midwestern hospitality.

Campus facilities include a well-equipped fitness center, a student center, three major libraries with combined volumes in excess of 3,250,000, and abundant computer resources.
Activity
Language and culture are closely connected. Co-curricular activities facilitate the development of language skills in a real cultural context. Besides helping students learn the U.S. and the local culture, the IELI co-curricular activities are an integral part of the writing curriculum. Full-time students are required to attend all co-curricular activities. Co-curricular activities typically include visits to many area attractions, including Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo; the Living History Farm in Iowa; the Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base; Lincoln, the capital of the state of Nebraska. Students also attend campus lectures, performing arts series, the annual Omaha rodeo or games featuring Creighton's Division I teams.
