Academic English IELI prepares students for university success. Students attend 20 hours of class per week, Monday through Friday plus weekly labs, university language exchange socials, a conversation partner program, and a variety of other co-curricular activities to keep you both learning and engaged using English. Classes are conveniently located in Marquis Hall. In addition to class time, students should expect to spend 15 to 20 hours per week on homework.
6 Levels of English proficiency, (*Beginning - Advanced) Five 8-week terms offered each year: Fall I, Fall II, Spring I, Spring II, Summer Standardized curriculum aligns well with UNT's expectations and goals *New students must have some beginning English skills before attending classes. Students must be able to read and write simple sentences in English, understand and use basic vocabulary, and follow simple directions in order to start at IELI.
Placement Test All new students take a placement test to determine English language proficiency.
Two hour test to assess listening, reading, grammar and composition skills Preparation is not required | Test is administered on the first day of orientation Test results determine level placement | Test results are available within the week
Automatic Placement for NEW STUDENTS International students who have taken TOEFL iBT or IELTS within the last 12 months may place directly into an advanced level.
Students who have completed IELI level 6 meet the English language proficiency requirement for admission to UNT.
Dual Enrollment for CONTINUING STUDENTS Students enrolled in level 6 with conditional admission to an undergraduate degree at UNT may enroll in two UNT courses while completing level 6.
Dual Enrollment is ONLY available to eligible students who have completed at least one term at IELI Students meet with an advisor to determine eligible classes Some classes require college/department approval |
