Students choose the 2-quarter or 3-quarter option, with an emphasis in Pre-MBA/Global Commerce, Marketing, Human Resources, or Finance. Students who complete 3 consecutive quarters of successful study qualify to apply for Optional Practical Training.
Benefit, Goal of this course :
These programs are for serious students with at least one to two years of full-time paid professional-level work experience in a business environment. Internships and part-time work will not be counted towards this requirement. Qualified students will learn about U.S. business practices and acquire necessary skills and knowledge for a career in business. The 3-quarter program is the best option for students who would like to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). If you do not have the required university or work experience for this program, please read about our Business Essentials program. Business Management: Two Quarters versus Three QuartersThe Business Management 3-quarter program combines the Business Management 2-quarter program with a 1-quarter specialization in your chosen area of emphasis.During the first quarter, all students take the same classes. Students in the 3-quarter program further develop their skills in the selected area of study during the third quarter. Students choose one of the following emphases: General Business (pre-MBA), Marketing, Finance or Human Resources.Both programs include daytime and evening classes. The daytime classes are specifically designed to meet the needs of international students and cover foundations of general business. Additional Admission Requirements: New students must achieve advanced levels (core level 109-110) of UC San Diego-ELI proficiency placement tests with certain minimum scores on UC San Diego-ELI's writing and and listening placement tests (equivalent to 90 iBT or IELTS 7.5). Continuing students coming directly from UC San Diego's ELI 10-week programs must have excellent attendance and grades in previous ELI classes, placement in one of ELI's highest proficiency levels, and certain minimum scores on ELI's placement exams. Students must submit copy of transcripts in English for the four most recent semesters of academic studies. These transcripts must show excellent grades, and that the student is in the top 5-10% of his/her school.
Focus of Study : This program focuses on preparing students to enter a bachelor's or master's degree program in highly selective and competitive American universities. Advanced levels of English proficiency (ELI core levels 109-110) may take this program. (Equivalent to a 90 iBT or 7.5 IELTS.) Student's English proficiency is determined during the first week of the program (week 0).
Curriculum : 11 weeks(25 hours per week,Monday - Friday) Schedule varies depending on level and classes chosen Can be taken one or two quarters Program Description: Focus on writing, research, and speaking excellence for university success Development of effective skills for meeting faculty and peer expectations in the American university classroom Academic Advising: Matching student's goals and record of achievement to university admission standards Choosing degree program Guidance in the application process to ensure timely and complete submission of university applicaiton materials Essential University Preparation classes, including: Research Paper Writing Paraphrasing and Summarizing Analytical Reading and Critical Response Discussion and Fluency for University Success GRE Test Preparation (verbal/critical reasoning and math prep classes) for students seekign graduate admission Concentrated Academic Skills for University Preparation, including: Academic Reading and Writing Public Speaking Skills Advanced Vocabulary Skills Advanced Grammar Skills For continuing students in the Academy, three or four hours per week of Academy class-time may be substituted for one main-campus credit-bearing class, depending upon the student's goals and in consultation with the Academic Advisor.
Follow-on Programs: Students who complete one or two programs in the University Preparation Academy have the opportunity to continue their studies at the English Language Institute, until they receive University admissions. Students may enroll in the Intensive Pre-University program, and/or the University and Professional Studies program before or following completion of one or two quarters in the Academy.

Additional Admission Requirements: New students must achieve advanced levels (core level 109-110) of UC San Diego-ELI proficiency placement tests with certain minimum scores on UC San Diego-ELI's writing and and listening placement tests (equivalent to 90 iBT or IELTS 7.5). Continuing students coming directly from UC San Diego's ELI 10-week programs must have excellent attendance and grades in previous ELI classes, placement in one of ELI's highest proficiency levels, and certain minimum scores on ELI's placement exams. Students must submit copy of transcripts in English for the four most recent semesters of academic studies. These transcripts must show excellent grades, and that the student is in the top 5-10% of his/her school.

16년 9월~12월 UCSD Extension에서 Communication and Culture Program이라는 10주과정 어학프로그램을 수강하였습니다. 학교가 위치해있는 샌디에고라는 지역은 워낙에 날씨가 좋기로 유명해서 날씨 및 환경에 대한 걱정은 전혀하지않으셔도 좋습니다. 다만, 겨울철에 가게될경우 밤에는 추워질수있으므로 겨울용 외투를 준비해가셔도 좋습니다. 제가 생활하면서 느낀점들을 최대한 순서대로 나열해보겠습니다.
1. 프로그램과 교육자들의 질이 상당히 높다! >> 프로그램안에서도 대학교처럼 듣고자하는 과목을 선택할수있으며 Communication and Culture는 주20시간이고 이외의 프로그램들은 주25시간에 선택의 폭이 더 넓으므로 Intensive Business 혹은 Intensive Academic 등을 고려해도 좋음!(TOEFL/GRE 등의 수업도제공)
2. 주거는 되도록 홈스테이보단 COSTA VERDE라는 아파트 단지를 이용할것! >> 샌디에고는 날씨는 좋지만 교통이 정말 답답할 정도여서 UBER/LYFT라는 택시서비스를 많이 이용하게 되므로 비교적 학교와 가까운 COSTA VERDE에서 살게된다면 무료셔틀버스도 이용할수있고 친구들과 어울리기에도 더 적합합니다.
3. 샌디에고에서는 정말 놀 기회가 많습니다. 여름철에 주로 서핑/세일링 등등 바다에서 노는 액티비티가 많으며 대학교내에 위치해있어 마음만 먹으면 언제든 미국인대학생 혹은 동양계미국인학생과 친구가 될 기회가 많습니다! 다운타운에 있는 클럽, Pacific Beach에 있는 Taco Tuesday 등등 모두 놓쳐서는 안되는 장소들입니다.(Balboa Park에있는 SD Zoo/Sea world 등등 그닥 비추입니다)
이전에 생활했던 일리노이라는 지역에 비해 정말이지 할것도많고 느낄것도많았던샌디에고! 적극적인 마인드로 모든 기회를 충분히 누릴수있다면 후회없는 보람찬 생활하고 오실겁니다!
1. 수업과 학교: 저는 conversation이라는 1주 10시간 4weeks 수업을 들었는데 저희 반은 스피치나 토론 수업이 많았고, 수업대신 소풍을 갈 때도 현장 과제가 있어요. 숙제도 매일 있는 편인데 하루 1시간~2시간이면 충분히 할 수 있는 양이어서 부담이 되지는 않았어요. 한 주에 2번 UCSD 학생들이 와서 같이 이야기하고 수업 듣는데 다들 친절하시고 학교 수업 외에 물어보는 것에도 답변을 잘 해주셔서 도움을 많이 받았어요. 수업은 문법보다는 표현법이나 스피킹 위주여서 지루하지 않고 재미있어요! 다른 스탭분들도 샌디에고 내의 여러 관광지나 액티비티에 대해서 알려주시려고 늘 노력하시고 굉장히 친절하세요! 학교에는 다양한 시설이 많은데 저는 주로 식당가와 도서관, 서점을 많이 이용했어요. 헬스장도 이용할 수 있긴 한데 등록 절차가 생각보다 까다로워서 익스텐션 학생들 중에는 이용하는 학생을 보지 못했어요. 그래도 본인이 노력하면 학교 안에서 하는 다양한 행사랑 시설들 잘 이용할 수 있어요!
2. 학교 외 활동: 수업이 12시 10분이면 다 종료가 되어서 사실 학교 안보다는 밖에서 더 많은 생활을 했어요. 저는 한달만 있을거라 굉장히 열심히 돌아다녔는데 샌디에고 대표적 명소와 맛집 다 도는데 한달 꼬박 다 걸렸어요! (진짜 하루도 안 쉬고 돌아다니고, 놀았는데도!) 가기 전에 샌디에고 대표적 관광지들 (코로나도섬, 리틀이탈리, 올드타운, 발보아파크, 여러 비치들, 씨월드, 포테이토칩, 동물원, 레고랜드, 씨포트빌리지, 아울렛 등등) 잘 찾아보고 계획 세우면 될 것 같아요. 처음부터 날짜별로 계획을 완벽하게 세우는 건 사실 따르기 힘들구요, 가고 싶은 곳들이랑 먹고 싶은 것들 목록 정해서 반 친구들이랑 오늘은 여기가고 내일은 여기가자!면서 짧게 짧게 일정 잡는 게 편해요. 어차피 다들 수업 끝나고 할 일 없어서 어디 가자고 하면 보통 다 잘 따라와요. 같은 반에서 여러 친구들 사귀어서 같이 다니면 계속 영어로 대화할 수 있어서 좋구요. 특히 친구들 집에서 하는 파티가 일주일에 두세 개씩은 있는데 그 파티에서 친구 많이 만들 수 있고 진짜 재밌으니까 누가 파티 간다고 하면 같이 가도 되는지 물어보고 꼭 같이 가세요! 또 MEET UP이라고 현지 사람들이 하는 모임 있어요. 여기 나가면 미국인 친구 많이 만들 수 있는데 MEET UP도 종류가 엄청 다양하니까 잘 확인해보고 관심 있는 곳으로 가면 좋아요!! 또 주말을 이용해서 LA가는 경우도 많고 멕시코가 가까워서 멕시코 가는 경우도 많이 있어요!
3. 교통: 차가 있으면 진짜 세상 편하긴 한데 나름 버스랑 트롤리가 잘 되어 있는 편이어서 어디든 갈 수는 있어요. 다만 차로 가면 15분인 거리도 대중교통 타면 1시간 정도 걸리긴 해요. 또 정류장 마다 시간표가 붙어있는데 잘 맞지는 않아요. 가끔 대중교통으로 가는 게 너무 불편한 곳들은 친구들이랑 우버, 리프트 같이 타면 대부분 5~10불 안에서 움직일 수 있어요. COMPASS CARD를 사서 다니면 되는데 학교에서 사면 훨씬 저렴하니까 첫날만 현금으로 버스타고 학교 가서 OT끝나고 카드 사는게 이득이에요. 어디서 사는지는 OT때 캠퍼스 투어하면서 알려주시고, 안알려주는 경우에는 오피스 가서 물어보면 돼요.
4. 숙박: 저는 클레어몬트 근처에서 홈스테이를 했는데 친구들 대부분 COSTA라는 기숙사에 살았어요. 홈스테이 장점은 아침 저녁이 제공되는 거랑 현지인랑 대화할 기회가 많다는 것이고 코스타는 학교에서 가깝고 근처에 친구들이 많이 사니까 어디 갈 때 우버를 같이 탈 수 있어서 좋아요. 홈스테이 하면 홈스테이가족이랑 싸우는 경우가 많다고 하는데 저는 정말 좋은 분 만나서 잘 지내고 왔어요! 특히 홈스테이 하면 샌디에고에 대한 여러 정보를 얻을 수 있고 현지인 인터뷰 과제 같은 것을 도와주시기도 해서 좋아요. 혼자 먼 타지에 와 있어서 불안한 것들이 많은데 보호자가 생기는 느낌이에요!
5. 기타: 진짜 자기 하기에 따라서 많은 차이가 난다는 것을 느낄 수 있었는데요, 처음부터 나는 미국인이랑만 놀거야!라는 마음이면 친구 사귀기 힘들어요. 저는 처음부터 같은 반 친구들(비영어권)을 많이 사귀어서 그 친구들이랑 매일 놀러다녔는데, 미국인이랑만 놀겠다는 생각을 가지고 와서 정작 제대로 친구도 못 사귀고 방안에만 박혀있는 학생들이 있더라구요. 그렇게 혼자 있느니 차라리 저처럼 비영어권 국가 친구들이랑 놀러다니면서 영어를 많이 듣고 말하는게 더 빨리 늘고 훨씬 알찬 시간 보낼 수 있어요. 결국 친구가 친구 낳는다고, 시간 좀 지나고 다들 MEET UP이나 다른 행사에서 미국인 친구 사귀면 서로 소개도 해주고 같이 파티도 할 수 있어요! 또 어차피 다들 유한한 시간을 가지고 오는 거니까 그 시간동안은 한국에서 못하는 것들 많이 해보고 최대한 알찬 시간들을 보내시길 바라요.
