후기를 적을려니 공학도 스탈로 표로 카테고리별로 나누어 적을까 하다가....그럼 읽는 사람이 재미가 없을 것 같아 수다스럽지만 그냥 편안한 맘으로 읽을 수 있도록 이야기로 적어 봅니다.
산호세 주립대학을 잘 아시는 분은 없을 듯 합니다. 한국에 많이 알려진 대학도 아니고 여기 사람들은 줄여서 SJSU 라고 부르던데.... 특이하게도 다운타운 안에 그것도 시청과 나란히 위치하고 있습니다. 미국 완전 대도시 외에 일반 도시는 수직이 아닌 수평으로 넓게 발달해 있기 때문에 산호세 대학이 다운타운의 완전 중앙에 위치한다는건 좀 특이한 것 같아요. 저는 산호세를 선택한 이유가 실리콘밸리와 가까이 있다는 점, 그리고 비교적 학비가 싸다(?)는 점.학비가 싸다는건 유명 대학들에 비해서 약간 저렴하다는 것이지 엄청 많이 싼 것은 아닙니다. 암튼, 미국에 가본적도 없고 학교에 대한 정보도 알고 있는 바가 없어서..... 망설이고 있다가 우연히 인터넷 검색하다가 해외교육문화원 이란 유학원에서 올려 놓은 글을 보고 상담이라도 해보자 뭔가 하나는 건지겠지 하는 심정으로 찾아 갔다가 대박을 잡은 느낌? ^^;
해외교육문화원 분들이 엄청 적극적이고 친절하시다는 것은 가보신 분들은 다 아실거에요. 학생들을 건수로 생각하지 않고 뭔가 도움을 주기 위해서 성심껏 적극적으로 알아봐 주시고...칭찬 일색이면 혹시 그곳 직원이 글을 올린 거라 생각 하실 수 도 있겠지만. 참고로, 전 직장인이었고, 결혼도 하였고, 애도 있고, ㅎㅎ 유학을 결심하고 진행하고 실행하기까지 많은 고민과 어려움이 있었다는 것을 말씀드리고 싶네요. 사실 전 그때 결심 밖엔 없었고, 나머진 유학원(해외교육문화원)에서 다~~ 알아서 진행과 처리를 해주셨습니다. 직장인이다 보니 정보를 알아보고 준비하고 할 시간이 없었기 때문에 믿고 모든 걸 맡아 처리해줄 곳이나 사람이 절실히 필요했었습니다. 제가 장담하는데 이 유학원 믿을만 하다는 것. 강추입니다.
비자 준비를 위해서는 많은 서류가 필요합니다. 최종할력증명서는 기본이고 계좌잔고증빙, 병역(여자는 상관없고)증명 등등 본인이 준비해야 할 부분들도 상당히 많죠, 일단 제가 준비해야할 것들을 리스트로 받아서 준비했고 준비된 서류를 들고 유학센터에 방문하여 다시한번 체크하고 유학원에서는 대학쪽과 접촉하여 입학허가 등을 받는 것 같았어요. ( 전 사실 잘 몰라요 ㅎㅎ 유학원에 전적으로 의지했기 때문에) 3월 9일 시작하는 언어과정을 듣기 위해서는 그전에 F1비자를 받아야하는데 제가 유학원 찾아 간 것이 1월 말이었으니... 정말 빠듯한 시간이 었습니다.그런데, 원장님께서 실수 없이 한번에 착착 된다고 하면 가능 할 수 있다고 진행해 보자고 하시며 자신감을 보이시길래..... 혹시나 하는 맘에 그냥 믿고 따라가 보자 했는데 ㅎㅎ 정말 해내시더군요.한달만에 모든 걸 끝냈죠. 비행기표, 숙소(저는 홈스테이에 살고 있습니다.) 등등. 제가 준비한 건 제가 준비할 수 밖에 없는 서류뿐인 것 같네요. ㅎㅎ
정말 아무것도 모르고 왔는데 ㅎㅎ 와서 보니 더 절실히 느껴지더라구요. 정말 아무 것도 모르고 왔구나 ㅎㅎ산호세 대학이 어떤 곳인지도 모르고 결정했는데 운이 좋았다고 해야하나요? 주변 분들의 말씀에 의하면 좋은 대학이랍니다. 완전 명문 대학은 아니지만, 특히 엔지니어링 쪽은 아주 강하다고 하더군요 실리콘밸리와 가까이 있어서 엔지니어링쪽 인력을 많이 가져가고, 실제로도 산호세대학 출신들이 그곳에 많이 포진해 있다고 하네요. (여기도 학연이 있는지 같은 대학 출신을 선호한데요) 이대학 출신의 한국인도 만나봤는데 결코 나쁜 대학아니니 준비 잘 하셔서 대학원과정 해보시면 여기서도 충분히 잡을 구할 수 있다고 조언해 주시더라구요. CISCO코 다니시는 분도 만나 봤는데, 그분도 산호세대학 알고 오신거냐 물으시더니, 엔지니어링쪽이면 좋은 선택이었다고 하시더라구요. 그래서, 일단 대학선택은 후회 없습니다. (여기 분들에게 들은 얘기로 종합해보면 서울 시립대 느낌? ㅎㅎ 우리땐 서울 시립대는 공부는 잘하는데 가정형편상 학비가 저렴한 대학을 선택할 수 밖에 없었던 사람들이 많이 간다고들 했거든요) 제가 첨 도착했을 때 학교내 여러곳에서 건물 공사를 하고있었어요. 지금도 하는 곳이 있고 완공이 되어 6월에 오픈예정인 건물도 있고, 학교는 시내 중앙에 위치해 있어서 더 커지고 할 수 있는 입지는 아니지만, 비교적 학교가 넓기 때문에... 여기 학생들은 10명에2명은 스케이트보드를 타고 이동해요.자전거보단 스케이트보를 타더라구요. 정말 많이들 타요. 그래서 뚱뚱한 걸 수도 ..ㅎ지금 저는 언어가 안되니 언어를 하고있는데 ㅡ,ㅡ 숙제 정말 많아요. 물론 이게 영어가 아닌 한국 말이면 단1시간 안에 끝낼 수 있겠지만, 영어인지라...그리고 아직은 익숙하지 않은지라 시간도 오래 걸리고 숙제만 열심히 해도 공부는 될 것 같아요 ㅎㅎ 지금은 조금 익숙해져서 나아졌지만, 첨엔 ㅜ,ㅡ 정말 죽을 맛이었죠. 작문에, 보캐, 독후감, ppt준비... 여기와서 영어 ppt 발표 3번했습니다. 원랜 4번해야하는데 하나는 조별 숙제로 내준거라 사우디애시켰어요 대신 난 ppt만들고, 한국 학생들은 ppt만들기와 발표를 꾸준히 해와서 잘들 하잔아요? 근데 다른 나라 학생들은 아닌가봐요 ppt파일 만드는 실력은 거의 한국의 초딩수준? 절차와 순서 뭐 이런 형식이 없어요. 제 자랑은 아니지만 제 ppt파일 보고 난 후부터 제목도 넣고 순서도 넣고 하더라구요 ㅎㅎ
이번엔 숙소 운이 좋았단거 말씀드리고 싶네요, 저는 숙소가 홈스테이입니다. 홈스테이라고 하면 일반 가정집에 방하나 빌려서 생활하는 많이 불편하다고들 하는...맞습니다. 일반 가정집의 방하나 빌려서 화장실 같이 쓰고 주방도 같이 쓰고, 근데 일반 한국 가정집 같지 않기땜에 그렇지 않아요. ㅎㅎ 한국은 미친 아파트가 주거 공간이다 보니 상상만해도 불편할 수 밖엔 없죠. 그런데 여긴 2층 단독주택인데다, 뒷 마당도 넓고, 차고도 있고, 차고 있는 쪽은 차를 한국식 주차로 한다면 차는 3~4대 정도 더 주차 할 수 있는 공간이 있으니 엄청 넓은거죠. 주인 부부는 8시만 되면 불끄고 자요. ㅎㅎ 미국 문화가 일찍 자고 일찍 일어나기인가봐요. 학교갔다와서 집에서 공부하는데 주인 얼굴 볼일이 별로 없었어요. 그리고 외출 할땐 서로 미리 말을 하죠. 언제 나갔다 언제 온다. 저와 같이 홈스테이하는 사우디 학생 둘이 더 있는데. 얘들도 방에 들어가면 안나와요ㅋㅋ 물마실 때 가끔 마주치는 정도, 얘기도 잘 안해요. 왜냐구요? 사우디 발음에는 R발음이 심한데 그걸 내가 잘 못알아 들어서 say it again 몇번했더니, 자존심이 상했는지 귀찮아서인지 ㅎㅎ 요즘은 그냥 인사만 해요. 참 다행이죠. 전에 사우디 애가 너 영어 못한다고 해서, 니 발음이 문제라고,,,, for(포르) , import(임포르트), outport(아우트포르트) , important(임포르턴트) 걔들 발음 흉내좀 내줬더니 ㅎㅎㅎ 저는 홈스테이 주인 분들과 2개월 간의 생활로 가족이 되었어요. ㅎㅎ칠레계 미국분들이신데 한국나이로 70인 노인분들이죠. 사우디애들땜에 맘고생이 심하셨었나봐요. 첨에 제가 같을 땐 그냥 형식적으로만 대하셨는데.... 한국인의 싹싹함이라고 할까 아님 정? 근면함? 암튼 지금은 Korean 최고를 외치십니다. 홈스테이 규칙상 아침과 저녁만 제공되고, 휴일엔 그것도 없거든요. 근데 전 주말에도 챙겨주세요. 점심에 배고프면 컵라면 먹으라고 컵라면도 사다 놓으시고... 물론 칠례컵라면이긴 하지만. 먹을 만 해요. 한국의 카레라면 같은 맛? 가족, 친구 등등 다 소개시켜주시고....한국에서온 누구누구다 나의 친한친구다, ^^; 이번주 일요일에는 바베큐파티 초대를 받았어요. 산티아고 라는 분인데 주인아저씨 절친입니다. 운전면허를 따고 싶다고 얘기하니 주인아저씨가 바로 오케이하고 당장 가자고 집근처에 DMV가 있으니 가자고, ㅎㅎ 그래서 현재 필기는 되었고, 실기 남았습니다. 필기 붙은날 부터 운전 연습도 시켜주시고. 이정도면 가족 맞죠? 홈스테이가 힘들다고 한달 정도 생활하고 바꾸는 사람도 많다지만, 영어공부만 공부는 아닌 것 같아요. 다른 문화 사람들과도 잘 지낼 수 있는 훈련도 중요한 것 같아요. 룸메이트 4명과 생활하는 학생들 얘기도 들어 봤는데, 현지 미국인 학생이면 그나마 언어에 도움이 되는데 그 학생들은 말도 잘 안통하는 애들과 재미가 없으니 지네 친구들과만 논데요. 본인처럼 외국에서 온 학생과는 영어 수준이 도찐개찐인지라 하는 말만하고 영어가 느는지 마는지도 모르겠다고 하다라구요. 홈스테이도 제가 구한건 아니고 유학원에서 알아봐 준건데 정말 운발인건지... ㅎㅎ송과장님이 홈스테이에 대한 조언도 많이 해주시고, 불편하면 언제라도 말씀하시라, 그럼 바꿔드리도록 하겠다는 안심되는 말씀도 해주시고. 그런 것들이 많은 힘과 도움이 되었던 것 같아요.이번 기회에 다시 한번 감사의 말씀을 드리고 싶네요. ^^
이곳 학교에 다니면 학생증을 주는데 그 학생증에 스티커를 붙여줘요. 그 스티커만 있으면, 버스, 전철 이 공짜. 안그럼 매번 2달라 내야합니다. 도서관이 큰게 있는데. 문젠 한국처럼 운영하지 안다는것, 일찍 문을 닫아요. 저녁8시인가 그래요. 치안문제는 처음 도착해서 1주일 뿐, 그 이후 걱정 해본적 없어요. 치안은 정말 좋아요. 단, 8시만 넘으면 다운타운 이외에는 사람들이 없어요. 길에 돌아다니는 사람이 없어요. 무서울 만큼 사람이 없어요 ㅎㅎ 제일 중요한건 날씨 인데, 이건 송과장님의 실수가 있습니다. ㅜㅡ 여기 날씨 좋긴 한데 추워요. 햇빛에 나가면 따가운데 그늘로 오면 바로 긴팔찾게되는 그런 날씨. 후드 짚업을 항상 가지고 다녀야 해요. 지금 여기 곧 6월 되는데 여자 들은 어그부츠 신고 다니는 사람
아직도 있어요. ㅎㅎ 아침엔 구름이 엄청 많아서 추워요 낮이 되면 그 구름이 온데 간데 없이 사라지고 쨍한 햇볕이 내리 쬐죠. 근데 바람에 습기가 없어서 바람이 차고 시원해요. 그늘에 들어가면 바로 서늘하고, 건물안은 더 추워요^^ 미국사람들은 더위를 못참는가봐요 교실안도 서늘하다 싶을 정도로 에어컨디션을 틀어대요. 암튼 캘리포니아 올 생각 있으신 분은 긴팔, 겉옷 필 수 입니다. 미국은 학교도 산업인지라 학비도 비싸고, 교재도 비싸요. 4권 구입하는데 30만원 정도 들어요.
별볼일도 없는 ㅡ,ㅡ 네셔널지오그라피 교재인데...아마존서 사면 쌀줄 알고 아마존 찾아봐도 별 차이 없어서 그냥 학교에서 구입했어요. 음식값도 비싸요. 한국 대학교식당과 비교하면 안되요. 학교안에 식당이 있는데. 차이나식당이 젤
인기가 많아요. 그런데 음식사고, 콜라까지 주문하면 10달러 왔다 갔다 해요. 한국 강남 점심 값도 대체로 7~8천원 선인데 ...저는 아마존, 이베이를 많이 이용했어요. 해외배송료가 없으니 상대적으로 한국에서 구매할 때보다 싸더라구요.
단, 한국 물건을 여기서 사는건 바보에요. 비싸요. 한국에서의 가격이 아니죠. 준비할 때 한국제품 필요한건 빠짐 없이 준비하는게 좋아요. 여기서 사면 비싸니깐. 아.. 그리고, 중간중간 브레이크가 많아요. 방학 말고 브레이크. vacation은 긴거고, break는 짧은 봄방학 같은건데... 10일 정도씩 쉬거든요. 그때 여행들을 많이 해요.. 물론 돈이 필요하죠. ㅎㅎ 카 렌트, 여행 경비 등등 캘리포니아엔 가볼 곳이 많아서 좋다고 하네요. 전 공부가 필요해서 그 기간에 공부를 했는데.
영어는 늘지도 않고 ... 암튼 잘 생각해서 확실히 놀건지 죽도록 공부할 건지 결정 하면 될거에요. 그 기간 잘 이용하면 남들 보다 좀 더 빨리 영어도 늘고 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 산호세에는 사우디아라비아 학생이 젤 많은 것 같아요. 그 담이 중국, 그 담이 베트남. (어학연수 학생기준입니다.) 한국 학생들 많을 까봐 걱정하고 피해다녀야지 하는 생각은 안하셔도 되요. 한국 사람 만나서 정보 교환 하고 싶어도 못할 수 있어요. 제 생각에 한국 학생은 모두 2년제 college에서 UC계열을 바라보고 편입준비하느라 산호세대학에는 없나봐요 ㅎㅎ일반 학생은 인도도 되게 많아요. 남미쪽은 더더욱 많고요. ㅎㅎ 캘리포니아는 스페인어와 영어를 같이 써요. 관공서며 왠만한 곳엔 두개 언어가 표시되어 있죠. 여기 도착해서 느낀건, TV에서 보는 정통 백인들은 다 어디 간거야????? 캘리포니아엔 안사나??ㅡ,ㅡ 정통 영어 배우긴 틀린건가..... 하는 생각을 잠시 했는데. 일단 교사는 모두 백인입니다. 그리고, 야구장 가서 알았어요. (샌프란시스코 메이져 리그 야구장 말고 산호세에 있는 2부리그 야구장) 남자들은 키 190센티 이상의 거구에 여자들도 170이상의 백인, 블론디헤어를 갖은 사람들이 모이더군요. 백인들의 인종차별이 좀 있는건지 아님 선호 하는게 달라서 그런지, 야구장엔 백인 천지였어요. 2부리그 평일 경기의 야구장이었지만, 한국의 평일 프로야구 야구장의 인원만큼 오더라구요. 백인들의 거주지역과 남미계, 중국, 베트남, 등등 사는 시역들이 다들 구분되나봐요. 대체로 백인들은 외곽에 많이 산데요. 유색인종과 섞이기 싫은건지도 모르죠 ^^;암튼 정통 백인 보고 싶으면 야구장 가보세요.(남미계는 키가 작아요. 많이 작아요)

지금도 100% 아저씨 말을 알아 듣진 못해요. 아줌마말씀은 더더욱 어렵고요. ㅎㅎ대화하다 잘 전달이 안된 것 같다 싶으면 그날 저녁 메일을 써요. 그럼 답장이 바로 와요. 아저씨도 이런 노력을 아시는지 씨니어센터에 무료 언어 프로그램이 있는지, 지역공공도서관에 무료 프로그램이 있는지 알아보자며 같이 찾아봐주셨죠. 미국엔 자원봉사와 무료 프로그램이 많이 있어요. 잘 찾아보고 알아보고 이용하면 좋을거에요. 유학생들에게도 그런 것들은 이곳 현지인과 거의 똑같은
권한을 주는 걸로 알아요.
