저는 intensive 과정에 등록해서 오전 수업 + 일주일에 6시간의 오후 수업을 듣고 있습니다. 자신이 등록한 과정에 따라 수업 시수가 달라지게 됩니다. general 과정에 등록한 제 친구는 컴퓨터 학습을 한다고 합니다.
수업시간은 1시간 30분으로 이루어지면, 중간에 15분의 휴식시간과 점심시간이 있습니다. 오전에 2 타임의 수업을 하고 점심을 먹은 후 오후수업을 듣는 거죠. 오후수업도 1시간 30분으로 일주일에 네 번, 금요일을 제외한 날에 수업을 합니다. 오전 수업은 자신이 배정받은 레벨에서 반이 정해집니다. 단, 똑같은 레벨이라도 반이 여러 개가 있으므로 수업의 분위기는 전적으로 선생님에 의해 결정됩니다.
저희 반은 수업 분위기가 활발한 편입니다. 선생님이 성격이 굉장히 좋으신 분이거든요!! 아이들도 마찬가지인데, 가끔 간단한 게임 같은 걸 할 때면 동물원 같기도 합니다. 여자가 저 포함 두 명밖에 없고든요. 인원은 보통 12~15명 사이로 구성되는데 저희 반은 13명입니다. 그중에 여자가 두 명이라니.. 물론 다른 반은 적정한 성비로 구성된 것 같더군요. 기존 여자아이들이 과정을 다 마쳐서 그런가 봐요.
수업시간에 배우는 것은 reading, writing, listening, grammar 등등 여러가지가 있는데요, 그 비중은 선생님마다 다릅니다. 저의 경우에는 말할 기회는 오직 저에게 달려있습니다. 대화 시간이 따로 주어지지 않아요. 우리가 돈을 들이면서 어학연수를 가는 이유는 문법을 배우기 위해서는 아니잖아요? 궁금한 것이 생길 때, 뭔가 말하고 싶을 때 그 즉시 말하세요. 손은 따로 들지 않아도 됩니다. 그저 선생님이 들을 수 있도록 크게 말하면 절대로 무시하는 일 없이 다 들어주십니다.
하지만 이것도 선생님에 따라 달라요. 제 친구의 경우에는 똑같은 레벨이었는데도 항상 두 사람씩 마주보고 서서 대화를 하게 시켰다고 하더군요. 그리고 레벨이 낮을수록 더 많이 말을 하게 시키는 것 같습니다. 그래서 클래스메이트간의 사이도 좋다고 하네요.
오후 수업은 다양한 주제가 있는데요. conversation, idio, 토익/토플 등에서 자신이 선택하시면 됩니다. 저는 첫 주에 idiom 반에 배정이 됐었는데요, 좀 더 아카데믹한 수업을 원한다고 했더니 토익/토플반으로 바꿔주었습니다. 수업이 변경되는 데에는 일주일의 시간이 소요되므로 빨리 말하시는 것이 좋아요!
솔직해지자면, 보통 동양인들이 이런 수업에서 가만히 있는다고들 하죠. 제가 보기에 그건 전적으로 사람에 따라 다릅니다ㅎㅎㅎㅎ 수업시간에 열심히 질문 던지고 모두를 웃게 해주는 한국 사람 당연히 있구요. 또 서양인이라고 해서 다 적극적이고 활발하고 그런 것도 아니구요. 정말 사람 나름이에요!! 다들 알고 있잖아요. 힘들여 여기까지 왔는데 열심히 생활하지 않으면 내 손해라는 것을!
