많은 사람들이 동양인들은 수업시간에 소극적이라고 말합니다. 과거에는 정말 맞는 말이라고 생각했는데 이곳에 와서는 저부터 많이 변화하고 있습니다. 처음 학원에 왔을 때 저는 선생님께서 이름을 부르실 때만 대답하는 학생이었지만 지금은 우리 반에서 질문을 많이 하는 학생 부류에 속한다고 생각합니다. 책에서는 배우기 어려운 단어의 미묘한 분위기 차이라든가 실제 영어다운 표현을 묻는 질문을 하면서 많은 것들을 배우고 있습니다. 우리 한국 학생들은 대부분 어려서부터 영어공부를 해왔기 때문에 영어 전반에 걸친 지식은 아주 풍부합니다. 문제는 영어권 국가에서 현재 사용하는 진짜 영어를 구사하기 위해 다듬는 작업(polishing)이 필요하다는 것입니다. 이곳에 와서 하루하루 영어 실력을 다듬어가고 있다고 느낍니다.
# structured study
structured study 같은 경우는 의무적인 시간표가 정해져 있지 않기 때문에 놓치는 학생들이 많습니다. 그러나 mypli 홈페이지에 들어가서 꼭 시간표를 확인하고 시간이 된다면 꼭 수강하라고 권하고 싶습니다. structured study를 수강하면 좋은 점은 일단 다양한 선생님의 수업을 들어볼 수 있다는 것입니다. GE 수업이나 special skills 수업의 경우 선생님이 정해져 있습니다. 반면에 structured study의 경우 매번 선생님이 바뀌십니다. 그리고 이 시간을 통해 학원 친구들을 더 많이 알게 될 수 있습니다. 보통 저는 conversation 혹은 coffee conversation을 참가합니다. 이 시간에는 주로 그룹을 지어서 대화하도록 합니다. 다양한 주제를 가지고 대화를 하는데 이 대화를 통해서 여러 나라들의 특징들을 배우기도 합니다. 가령, medical insurance를 주제로 이야기를 한다고 한다면 브라질은 어떤 형태이고, 스위스는 어떤 형태인지를 듣게 되는 것입니다. 이 수업을 통해서 여러 나라들의 정치적 상황이라든지 문화적인 특색들을 조금이라도 배울 수 있습니다.
# homestay 가족들
처음 오기 전에 사실 저는 homestay를 신청하고 싶지 않았습니다. 독립적인 개인 공간을 확보하고 싶었고 비용을 고려할 때도 홈스테이보다 룸쉐어가 더 좋았습니다. 그런데 한 달 동안 머물기 위해 룸쉐어를 구하기 힘들뿐더러 캐나다 가정에서 실제 생활을 해보는 것도 또 다른 배움이라는 생각이 들어 홈스테이를 신청했습니다. 지금은 홈스테이로 온 것을 정말 잘한 결정이라고 생각합니다. 물론 장기간 있으실 분들은 처음에 홈스테이로 오셨다가 후에 룸쉐어를 구해서 나가는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다. 홈스테이에 머물면서 현지인들이 거주하는 동네주민처럼 생활해본다는 것도 참 좋았고 그 가정 속에서 생활해보는 경험도 좋았습니다. 그리고 보통은 홈스테이 하우스가 여러 명의 학생들을 받기 때문에 인간관계도 넓어진다는 이점도 있습니다. 저는 지금 제가 머무는 집에 굉장히 만족하고 있습니다. 홈스테이 아주머니가 하시는 말씀을 통해 특정 주제에 대한 아주머니의 생각을 들어볼 수 있고, 여러 유용한 정보들을 얻을 수도 있었습니다. 그리고 외로움도 훨씬 덜합니다. 오늘은 홈스테이 아주머니 그리고 아주머니의 딸과 Burnaby에 있는 Dear Lake에 다녀왔습니다. 운 좋게도 이번 겨울은 계속해서 맑은 날씨가 계속 되고 있어서 산책하기에 아주 좋습니다.
또 카플란에서는 Activity라는 활동이 있습니다. 이 활동은 선생님이 동행하는 활동이 있고, 그렇지 않은 활동으로 나누어져 잇는데요, 주로 멀리 가거나, 술을 마시거나 하는 활동에는 선생님이 동행하는 것 같습니다. Activity 활동으로는 Bar Night, Karaoke, Bowling, Road trip 등 다양한 활동이 준비되어 있는데요. 저는 사정상 많은 활동에는 참가해보지 못하고 이번에 Bar Night에 참가해 보았습니다. 이 Activity는 단순히 술만 마시는 게 아니라, 술과 함께 간단한 퀴즈를 통해 영어 실력도 늘릴 수 있고, 외국인 친구들과도 친해질 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있었습니다. 그러나 미국은 만 21세 미만에게는 술을 허용하지 않고 있어서 많은 친구들이 술을 마시지 못하여 아쉬운 점도 있었습니다. 주말에는 근처 워싱턴이나 보스턴으로 관광하는 Activity 활동이 있습니다만 저는 참가해 보지 못했습니다. 그러나 여유가 되신다면 많은 Activity에 참가하여 다양한 경험을 해보는 것을 강력히 추천합니다!
