Benefit, Goal of this course : This course is designed for students who want to prepare for university programs taught in English at the undergraduate or graduate level at any university.
Curriculum : English for Academic Success (EFAS) is an intensive 14-week English language program offered in 4 levels ranging from low intermediate (level 100) to advanced (level 400). EFAS level 400 is benchmarked to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a global standard in English language proficiency.
EFAS is designed for:
*students interested in meeting the English language requirements of the University of Waterloo *students interested in pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies at a university where English is the language of instruction *students from foreign universities looking to study English at an intensive academic level in a Canadian university environment for 4 months to 1 year

Renison에서 EFAS 과정을 수료중입니다.
EFAS 시작 전에 한달가량 시간이 있어 GEAR 코스를 수료했습니다. GEAR 코스는 시작하기 전에 레벨 테스트를 하지만, 학생 수가 적어 학생의 수준에 맞게 반을 나누지 않습니다. 그래서 GEAR 코스는 생각보다 훨씬 쉽게 수업이 진행됩니다. 캐나다 문화 수업이 포함되어 있어 캐나다에 적응하는 데에 (소소한) 도움이 되고 기본적인 formal 글쓰기 방식을 배울 수 있습니다.
EFAS 코스는 4개 반으로 나누어지고 봄 학기에는 14명정도 였으나 겨울학기에는 정원마감 됬습니다. Formal 글쓰기, 말하기, 학문적 기술(논문 형식, 인용)을 배우는 수업으로 나누어져 있고 학문적 기술을 배우는 수업이 전체 수업의 반 정도를 차지합니다. 과제는 미루지 않으면 제 때 끝내는 것은 어렵지 않고, 수업은 선생님들이 친절하셔서 재밌게 들을 수 있습니다. 시험도 무엇을 준비해야 하는지 알려주셔서 크게 걱정할 필요는 없습니다.
GEAR와 EFAS 공통으로 한달에 한번씩은 토요일에 신청 가능한 이벤트가 있는데, 나이아가라 폭포를 보러 가거나 토론토로 쇼핑을 하는 등 매달 바뀝니다. 그 외에도 holiday 이벤트(Thanksgiving, halloween)는 항상 있고 매 학기에 하루 짧은 여행을 하고 그 여행에 관한 과제가 한개 있습니다. 수업은 선생님에 따라 안맞다고 생각할 수 있습니다.(원하는 수업만 골라서 들을 수 있고, 1달 단위로 듣는 것도 가능한 것으로 알고 있습니다.) 그 외에 듣고 싶은 수업이 있으면 학교 홈페이지에서 장소와 시간을 확인하고 청강하는 것이 가능합니다.
한국인 학생은 드물고 일본인 학생은 봄 학기때 일본 대학과 연계해서 많이 왔었습니다. 중국인과 사우디 아라비아 학생은 항상 많습니다. 그 외의 국가 학생들은 반 마다 3-5명정도 있는 것 같습니다.
