Accommodation
Accommodation in Heidelberg is both sparse and expensive. There are around 36,000 students who need a roof over their head, so with around 7,000 new students arriving in the winter semester, the housing market is especially challenging at this time (September/October). In contrast, around 2,500 arrive in the summer. However, at the beginning of the winter semester, only around 1,000 - 1,500 rooms become free (in the summer semester this number is around 500 - 700) of which half are assigned to international and German students. This means that, unfortunataely, only a small proportion (around 13%) of all new students find accommodation in a student hall. The rest have to look for accommodation in the private housing market. Rent prices are generally high in Heidelberg, and there is a real shortage of reasonably priced living space. You'll need to factor in around €450 a month for a 1-room apartment on the private housing market. A room in a private flat share can be found for around €250-€350. Heidelberg student union provides around 4,800 rooms in flat shares in around 65 halls of residence to students at Heidelberg. The rental price of rooms in flat shares are between €170 and €350 according type and facilities.

Facilities
Canteens
Buffet or menu of the day? It's not an easy choice! Depending on location, the student union canteens give students the choice between different main meals, side dishes and cheap menus of the day alongside the extensive selection of food in the buffets. Students with vegetarian and vegan diets are also well catered for - there are always vegetarian and vegan dishes to choose from, as well as meat-free ones. No matter what dish you choose, the highest quality standards still apply. Many ingredients come from controlled organic farms or from regional producers, and to give you even more variety, there are many special promotions like international weeks or goodies fresh from the barbecue in summer.
Labels on food items with logos for gluten and lactose-free dishes help you to manage your food intolerances. If you're still not sure, you can always ask the head of the kitchen on site. They would be more than happy to help you with any problems.
Activity
The ICI club provides a space for international and home students to meet new people at different events like parties, film screenings or international evenings.
International events
Fascinating insights into foreign cultures and worlds, stunning pictures and culinary delights from around the world - that's what the international or regional evenings have to offer.
German and international students organise international evenings, exhibitions, readings, discussion groups and parties - and invite you to look further than the Heidelberg bubble.
International café
Come and chat over a beer or coffee the international café - no matter whether in German or in your own language! To make evenings more interesting, there is a motto which the regulars stick to and which they will introduce to you. If you feel like it, you can make your own contribution to the theme, take part in the discussions, or simply just listen.
The international café takes place during term time every 2nd Wednesday from 20:00 in the Lesecafé of the Studihaus.
Poetry workshop
The poetry workshop takes place once a month in Lesecafé, always at 19:00. At every meeting, you can read your own written poetry or other texts. After that there's a group discussion about it. Listeners are always welcome, even if they themselves don't write, but still have interest in poetry and writing.
