Heidelberg College GymnasiumAbout the
Structure of the school Heidelberg College differs from other grammar schools in terms of both teaching and extracurricular activities. The focus of everyday school life is the interaction between students and teachers. The relatively small number of pupils enables educationally sensible class and course sizes. The content of the lessons is based on the curriculum of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Heidelberg College is currently attended by over 500 girls and boys, who are spread over 21 classes. The classes are smaller than in state schools.
Language sequence
The first foreign language, English, begins in the 5th grade and from the beginning of the 6th grade French or Latin can be chosen as a second foreign language. Upon entering grade 8, students can choose whether they want to learn Spanish as a third foreign language (new language profile) or whether they want to do more natural sciences (natural sciences profile).
Benefit, Goal of this course : Goal is to prepare the Abitur exam, which is necessary for university application.
Curriculum :
Art profile
In the art profile, the students can expect an interesting mixture of theory and practice. In addition to the basics of European art history, the art profilers also get to know the references to related subjects such as history and sociology, a thoroughly realistic general education that is linked to their own creative work. The focus is on practical work. Whether architectural drafts and various models, three-dimensional objects, printing techniques, painting, dealing with colors, and of course drawing again and again. It's always about creating concepts yourself and encouraging students to solve problems independently.
The program also includes visits to museums; the pupils should have the opportunity to experience art first hand. Participation in competitions such as a school art exhibition is also possible.
In grades 8 and 9, the practical work makes up two thirds of the overall grade and one third is accounted for by theory (involvement in class and keeping the sketchbook are also taken into account).
In class 10 theory and practice are rated 1: 1.
Sport profile In the sports profile, too, theory should be closely linked to practice. The practical training is very diverse: In addition to the usual school sports, numerous elective sports are offered in greater depth, for example end zone sports ( rugby, ultimate frisbee ) or badminton. All kinds of excursions with sporting content are conceivable on the profile days: We have already been to water skiing, the bouldering hall, various tennis courts or lacrosse training and much more. Also on the program every spring is the compulsory old town run as an endurance test or even participation in the Heidelberg half marathon. In the theoretical part, the students gain insight into biological processes such as the cardiovascular system, muscle cells and energy generation, in addition to the training course with the contents of endurance, strength, speed, flexibility and coordination.
In addition, the sports profilers hold their first own lessons (own choice in class 8, assigned topic with close theoretical relevance in class 9 or 10).
In the sport profile subject, students have a total of six hours of sport per week: 2 hours of regular school sport with the class, as well as two hours of theory and / or conditioning training, in which endurance and strength are the focus and two hours of practice in the profile.
The overall grade consists of one third from theory, one third from practice in regular physical education and one third from practice in profile.
Spanish profile
Spanish has been very popular as a teaching subject since its inception. As the language of an important member state of the European Union and a large part of the American continent, it is one of the most widely spoken world languages. Therefore, proficiency in Spanish can be beneficial for many professions and in many areas. At Heidelberg College you have the option of choosing Spanish from Grade 8 as a four-hour profile subject.
The aim of Spanish lessons is to enable the students to communicate verbally and in writing through age-appropriate learning situations. You first learn to communicate in everyday situations and also deal with cultural and literary topics. Over the course of three years, you will gain insights into the culture and living conditions of Spain and Hispanic America.
In addition, the basic grammatical structures are taught which, in combination with the basic vocabulary, enable understanding in Spanish-speaking countries. The way of working and grading are similar to those in other modern foreign languages.
The level of knowledge at the end of the tenth grade corresponds to level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In the upper level there is the option of continuing Spanish as a 4-hour subject, which can also be chosen as a high school diploma.
Science and Technology Profile (NwT)
The three natural sciences that are taught in addition to mathematics are spread over three school years at Heidelberg College: In grade 8 biology is on the program, in grade 9 follows physics and in grade 10 chemistry. On the basis of various internships and projects, the students should immerse themselves in the world of natural sciences in an independent, problem-oriented and practical manner.
In grade 10, for example, building a robot is on the agenda. Whether soldering the circuit board, programming, getting to know all electronic components such as processor, LED, resistor, line and touch sensor, the students get an insight into all the details. How is a cell phone structured? How does an engine work in cars, motorcycles, ships and airplanes? And how can sustainable building and climate protection be reconciled? The students create their own construction plans, design virtual tours through the self-modeled house on the computer and conduct loan negotiations with a real bank.
Often the class also takes part in scientific competitions, in which films they have made themselves are used as an evaluation criterion. The students are also motivated by the fact that they also practice using cameras and editing programs.

Accommodation
About 40 boarding students are supervised by family Holzberg and educationally qualified employees in a pleasant learning environment.
We offer our girls and boys comfortably furnished single and double rooms in separate buildings . Our boarding school is very idyllic: With a view of the castle , a large garden that extends all the way to the top of the Philosophenweg and close proximity to the old town with its numerous attractions, our students have many different options for their personal leisure time. The school's own kitchen , under the direction of head chef Andreas Moser, prepares fresh and varied meals every day.
The houses
Our girls' house is located in a beautiful garden area directly below the Philosophenweg. Here the students can relax comfortably: Regardless of whether you want to do yoga, meditation , or just take a short walk with your girlfriend - there is enough space for nice conversations in the middle of nature. And if you like it a little more exotic, visit the herb garden with native flora, a pond and numerous fountains and sculptures. The girls' building is a listed half-timbered house with a historical interior. The comfortably and nicely furnished single and double rooms as well as the separate girls' kitchen take care of it for a secure, familiar atmosphere in a pleasant ambience.
The boys' house is also a classicist, listed building. The school's library and a billiards room ensure that our boys never get bored. Special events take place in the Red Salon. Those looking for peace and relaxation can make themselves comfortable in the comfortably designed single and double rooms.
Our boarding school not only offers the students a very familiar atmosphere , but also a clearly structured daily routine .
