Clifton High School is located on a large leafy site in the heart of Clifton, a short walk from Brunel’s historic Clifton Suspension Bridge. From our Nursery School to Sixth Form, children are taught in bright, airy classrooms located in our beautiful Victorian buildings. At the heart of our school is our lawn, surrounded by mature trees and shrubs. For almost 140 years this area has been a symbol of the vitality and growth of our school and the boys and girls who have been educated and nurtured alongside it. Parents comment on the excellent relationships between staff and pupils - relaxed but always respectful. The rapport, encouragement and support available to every single child, pupil and student create an atmosphere where children can develop happily and progress successfully. If you choose Clifton High School you will become part of something very special. Since it was established in 1877 the School has been described as forward-looking, nurturing in its approach and academically strong. We are a dynamic organisation, fleet of foot and always ready to move with the times. We are the only school in Bristol and were the first in the South West to operate the Diamond Edge Model of education where at certain key stages in their learning boys and girls are taught separately in core subjects. This helps them achieve maximum potential in the classroom, but at the same time benefits them by retaining a socially educational environment in some subjects and outside the classroom. Academic success is also integral to us at Clifton High School, but we do not measure success through league tables alone. We put as much emphasis on who our pupils become as on what they achieve. With this in mind, social and personal development are crucial. We celebrate individuality and our aim is to produce free-thinking young people with belief in themselves, confidence to pursue their ambitions and the resilience to succeed, whatever life presents. Alongside this we believe that the privilege of excellent education brings with it responsibility and we send young people out into the world who are ready to make a real and positive contribution to society.
The Sixth Form at Clifton High School has a distinctive feel. It is a social, friendly group of between 55 and 80 students, each of whom receives unfaltering support and outstanding and inspiring teaching. Our students are offered a myriad of opportunities to develop their skills and talents beyond the classroom, in preparation for life beyond school. Years 12 and 13 are a period of growth and transition, and students have to make some potentially life changing decisions about their future during this time. Clifton High School has a reputation for the outstanding levels of personal support and attention it gives its Sixth Form students. Dr Neill, Head of School; Mr Psarros, Head of Sixth Form; Mrs Giles, Head of Futures and Skills and personal tutors all provide advice and guidance on our students' future plans. We expect excellent academic results from our students. In 2017, in excess of 80% of students secured places at their first choice universities, all of which were highly acclaimed institutions. In 2013/2014, the Department of Education league tables named Clifton High as one of the top two independent schools in Bristol for academic progress between GCSE and A level. However, we put as much emphasis on who our pupils become as what they achieve. We expect all our students to “get involved” and as a small Sixth Form there are plenty of opportunities for leadership and responsibility such as World Challenge and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. We encourage all our students to develop their talents to the full, whether their strengths lie in sport, drama, music or elsewhere. The opportunities are vast at Clifton High School; with a strong academic focus and unrivalled pastoral support, students leave Clifton High School with belief in themselves, confidence to pursue their ambitions and the resilience to succeed whatever life presents.
At Clifton High School we offer a broad choice of A level courses. Our small Sixth Form allows us a high degree of flexibility and we do our best to accommodate each student's subject choices where possible. The choices which are made at A level can have a major impact on what can be studied at degree level and upon future careers. Subject combinations tend to relate to broad categories of degree - scientific, linguistic or artistic. If students are unsure what they would like to study at A level we will offer support and advice to help them make the right decisions. Many courses at university level build upon the knowledge which has been gained while still at school. For this reason, some university courses may require applicants to have studied a specific subject prior to entry, others may not. However, there are some A level subjects that are required more often than others and these subjects are sometimes referred to as facilitating subjects. Subjects that can be viewed as ‘facilitating’ are:
Biology, Chemistry, English(Literature), Geography, History, Languages(Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, German), Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Physics
A level subjects currently offered at Clifton High School: Art and Design, Geography, Biology, History, Business Studies, Latin, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computing, Music, Design Technology, Physics, English Literature, Product Design, French, Spanish, Further Mathematics, Theatre Studies, German

Accommodation
Clifton High School is not a boarding school but we do welcome international students who intend to live in the UK without a parent or guardian. We do this through our home boarding service which is available to students aged 16 or over studying for GCSEs and A levels.
It is our aim that all international students are fully integrated within school life socially, academically and in extra-curricular activities. In order to achieve this and to ensure all our students get the very best from their education and their time in the UK, we offer home boarding. Unlike a boarding school, international pupils do not live at school but with carefully selected host families who are linked with the school and who live in the local area.
As with all our boys and girls, Clifton High School gives all its international students every opportunity to realise their full potential. Students discover and develop their own aptitude and interests, whether academic, sporting, artistic or in performance. Our international students form strong, lasting friendships, a network which will be of benefit throughout their lives. We encourage all our young people to believe in themselves, to think independently and to face challenges with confidence, determination and a sense of excitement. We prepare them for university life and provide excellent support for the university selection process.
Home Boarding Students are placed with carefully chosen host families who are linked with the school and live locally. They are overseen by our International Admissions Office (IAO), and live as members of those families during term time. Each student is provided with his or her own room and study facilities so that their privacy is respected and they are relieved of the pressure of a communal life which can feel impersonal and surprisingly lonely, especially for students from overseas. On the other hand, they are encouraged to participate fully in the life of their host family and discover the British way of living.Parents can rest assured that their sons or daughters are being looked after wisely and given a degree of freedom balanced with family care that reflects what they would experience in their own homes. Our International Admissions Office (IAO) works very closely with the host families, teachers, tutors and staff throughout the period that the international student is studying at Clifton High School, and ensures they are supported to the full.
*Benefits of home boarding *Students are given personal care and attention in a caring, comfortable, home environment. *Often, the host family has a child studying at the school or a member of the family is a former student. The host family can therefore fully support international students to settle at school. *Students appreciate the security that living with a host family brings. *Students are involved fully in the host family’s daily life. *Students benefit from full immersion in the language and therefore make rapid progress in English. *Students have full back-up support from their host family in case of any issues arising during their stay. *Living with a family is great for cultural socialisation and orientation on arriving in a new country and a new environment. *Home boarding is a very affordable option compared to traditional boarding offered by the majority of schools. *Students can socialise with the family as much as they wish and have as much privacy as they need. *Students are not placed into a large, impersonal boarding house where they are ‘just another student’. *They are not continually surrounded by other students of their own nationality, speaking their own language. At Clifton High, international students are encouraged to mix with local students.
Facilities
The environment and the outdoors are very important to us at Clifton High. We are a recognised Eco school. As well our beautiful lawn we have our own outdoor class room, wildlife garden and pond, wildflower meadow and raised beds for vegetables; we keep our own bees and produce Clifton High School honey.
Children in Nursery School to Year 4 are taught in their own buildings with younger children benefiting from dedicated and secure outdoor play areas with age-appropriate equipment. Year 5 and 6 classrooms are located in the Main School Building nearer the Senior School classrooms and facilities. Year six pupils have their own science laboratories.
The site has excellent facilities: three libraries, seven science laboratories, three IT suites and a modern languages laboratory. We have a dedicated music block with teaching and practice rooms and a MAC equipped music technology suite. We have a design and innovation department with its own workshops, a classic car and the latest laser cutting equipment. The Art Department is home to senior and junior art studios, a kiln room, ceramics studio, photographic studio and dark room. Our 170 seat Rose Theatre is a fully equiped theatre/ performance space with retractable seating and parqueted flooring that supports a dance studio, an on-site cinema, a discotheque, musical and drama performances. In the Sixth Form students have access to their own common room and dedciated café. Wifi is available throughout in all classrooms used by the senior school and in public areas of the main building.
Our provision for sport at Clifton High is excellent. On site in Clifton we have a floodlit multi-use games area (MUGA), indoor 25m heated swimming pool and gymnasium. Sport also takes place at our Coombe Dingle Sports Complex which we own in partnership with the University of Bristol. Here pupils can enjoy first class sporting facilities including indoor and outdoor tennis courts, netball courts, grass and artificial pitches. The first XI's and XV play matches under floodlights wherever practical to do so. During the summer of 2016, the facility was extensively improved.

Activity
When visitors come to our School they frequently comment on what a busy place it is: children taking tennis lessons on the MUGA or playing rugby on the lawn, the sound of singing drifting from the music block, or the smell of fresh baking from the food room, children dashing to and from the swimming pool or taking part in drama rehearsals. Take a look inside the classrooms and the picture is the same: hands-on product making in the Design and Technology Suite, enthusiasm for experiments in the science laboratories or the happy sounds radiating from the Nursery School and Reception classes. You will see engaging lessons, one-to-one tuition, small group tutorials and specialist combined French and English curriculum teaching to name but a few. Throughout the year the School calendar is action-packed. In the Autumn Term we hold our exciting Marquee Week and our poignant Carol Service in Clifton Cathedral. In the Summer Term we see the highlight of our school year, Rose Day, which encompasses our service of Thanksgiving, Commemoration and Prize-giving followed, in the evening, by the annual Rose Ball. Musical performances, drama productions, art exhibitions and sports fixtures also take place throughout the year as well as House fundraising days and competitions. *Rose Day: Close to midsummer's day when Bristol is at its finest, Clifton High School holds its annual Rose Day. Celebrating our achievements, inspiring our young people and welcoming both new friends and old; we say farewell to our Sixth Form students, raise a glass to their future and celebrate the successes of the School at the end of a busy year. Carol Service: At the end of the Autumn Term we hold our annual Carol Service in Clifton Cathedral. A poignant occasion, this candlelit service is based on the traditional King’s College, Cambridge Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. It is a fitting end to our term and marks the beginning of our Christmas celebrations. Marquee Week: Now in its fifth year, Marquee Week 2017 will take place between Tuesday 10th and Monday 16th October. A much anticipated event in our school calendar, boys and girls, parents and friends look forward to Marquee Week each year with eagerness and excitement. Extra-Curricular: There are over 100 extra-curricular clubs and societies at Clifton High School ranging from young contrarians, astronomy and animation to fencing, swimming and taekwondo. The clubs are split into three categories to ensure that pupils are developing into holistic individuals. The categories are: Skills Development, Academic Progress and Individual Brilliance. *The Arts *Sports Outdoor Education
